I’m trying something different. Instead of my usual snarky writing about all the doom and gloom, I’m writing about something positive (I’m sure I’ll slip before the post ends*). That positive? Godot!
If you read my other post about how I finally got a laptop without disclosing which one (MacBook Air M5, btw), I mentioned I’d be dipping my toe back into game dev, and dip I have!
I’ve picked a good time to jump back in, too! Particularly because indie game developers are currently undergoing an absolutely heinous pillage of their craft. A rise in AI-assisted reverse-engineering means that talentless cunts can steal the handiwork of those who actually have the talent, and can sell these pilfered imitations on Steam, oftentimes before the original games have been released (*It didn’t last long). Alas, whilst that has pissed me off something rotten, Godot has been a shining distraction through the rough.
I’m currently working through a course that teaches Godot across a handful of different projects, covering 2D, 3D and a variety of genres. And I’ll tell you what, learning this shit is so damn cool. Godot makes it incredibly easy to work with. I’m still only scratching the surface, but endless possibilities are already spinning around my head ten to the dozen. Compared to the yesteryears of developing in Unity, which were admittedly made easier by following a well-written book, it’s night and day.
There isn’t much else to say other than Godot is the shit. As I say, I’m still early doors with it, but if anyone fancies dipping their toe into game dev, I heartily recommend checking it out. It’s completely free, and while a course may set you back ~£15, you can start building a game immediately. It’s so rewarding to see your handwritten code working to shift pixels around a screen. It’s rekindling a love for development I’ve missed for some time, and I can’t wait to get working on a proper project. Check back in next year when I’m dealing with a myriad of gaming systems, and pulling my hair out because nothing works and I want to quit game dev. It’s gonna be a ride!
